You’ve heard it before. Probably a million times if you’re a decent age like one of us here! (that would be Phil.) It’s on TV shows, it’s in the media, it’s in the papers and magazines. It is everywhere!
“You need to drink plenty of water to maintain your health.”
“It’s one of the best things for your overall health.”
“8 glasses a day for optimal health benefits.”
And many more along those lines. You get the picture. In fact the “8 glasses a day,” that has been touted by many in the health industry as the minimum standard to ensure that one is not “chronically dehydrated,” is not necessarily true. Your water intake requirements depend very much on your environment and situation, basically how much water you lose and have to replace. The source of this myth is not known.
For example, this author has worked in 52°C heat (125°F) and literally drank 5 litres of water, that’s 10.6 US liquid pints, in an hour! And I can tell you, my body was telling me I needed it. That’s plenty more than the 8 glasses PER DAY rule. Considering that excess water consumption allegedly “leaches minerals,” another untruth, from your body it’s no wonder I got muscle cramps at night after extremely hot days like those, but more on that later.
If, however, you were completely sedentary in a very cool environment it is highly doubtful you would need voluminous amounts of water. It’s been said the 8 glasses a day rule is less a measure of what people need than a convenient reference point and that water derived from food intake should be included as part of a persons water intake. There is nothing wrong with liking water and drink as much as you want. Your body will get rid of what it does not need.
We think it is important to note one thing that has been proven in studies is the correlation between such variables as increased water intake and a decreased risk of colon cancer. So go ahead and drink up! A favourite saying of mine is, “I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.”
This article is far less concerned with the volume of water you intake than the actual water quality and the question, “What is the importance of CLEAN drinking water?” If you do happen to have a high intake of water the question of the quality of water becomes far more pertinent.
After all, it’s fine to say “drink a shedload of water every day. It’s going to be really good for your health.” But let’s be honest here. It most definitely will NOT be good for your health if the water is radioactive or has cyanide coursing through it right?!
When a statement like that is made, people at large see it as obvious. Of course they would not drink a high volume of radioactive water. They would not drink ANY of it! Of course it’s not going to be healthy for you.
But what if the poisons were a little less obvious? A little more subtle than the examples above?
Water Ain’t Water.
That’s right folks, water is a tricky thing these days. There’s more to it than meets the eye. We seem to have been conditioned into believing that as long as the water we consume or use in our day-to-day lives is nice and clear, that we can see through it, and it’s not all cloudy or muddy, that it must be fine for us to consume. Well we are here to tell you otherwise.
First things first…….
What’s in Tap Water?
We’re so glad you asked.
Chlorine is added to kill bacteria. it is used in a swimming pool or a spa to the same effect. Studies show that people who drink chlorinated water have a 21 per cent greater risk of developing bladder cancer and a 38 per cent greater risk of developing rectal cancer compared with people who drink no chlorine. ¹
Sodium Fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay but is recognised for it’s mind and behaviour changing potential. ²
Here is what Dean Burk, Chief Chemist Emeritus, U.S. National Cancer Institute had to say about fluoride.
“Fluoride causes more human cancer death, and causes it faster than any other chemical.”
and the U.S. Dispensatory 24th edition, page 1456 says,
“Fluorides are violent poisons to all living tissues because of the precipitation of calcium.”
Aluminium Sulphate is added to stabilise sediments. Studies have linked aluminium to Alzheimer’s disease and it’s a little unsettling to learn that dissolved aluminium in drinking water may enter the brain from as little as a single glass of water. ³
Then there are the Pipeline Pollutants such as copper, iron, zinc, lead and others. The Environmental Protection Agency, USA (EPA) has found that lead in drinking water is one of the main sources of lead in the bloodstream, contributing 20% of total lead exposure for an average person 4. Lead can cause severe neurological damage, particularly in children.
And, not to alarm you any more than we already have, there’s Radon to be concerned about. Radon is a radioactive gas and when it is ingested in drinking water it is linked to increased risk of stomach cancer.
What’s Erin Brockovich Got to do With This?
According to The Environmental Working Group (EWG), who are an excellent organisation that are dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, an estimated 218 million people in the U.S.A., more than two thirds of the entire population of The United States of America in all 50 states are still exposed to water contaminated with hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium-6, in levels that California scientists deemed unsafe. This is 25 years after the legal wrangle over the Hinkley water supply that was the subject of the movie “Erin Brockovich.”
So this a special message to our drinking water beleaguered friends in the United States:
You are going to have to take personal responsibility for the safety of you and your family’s drinking water because governmental authorities and unethical corporations continue to not give a sh*t about your health!
In fact, they seem quite happy to feed you into the medical industrial complex by having you consume chemically dosed drinking water. You are just another tiny profit centre victim if you do not look after yourself.
If you would like to read the full article on the extent of the hexavalent chromium contamination in the drinking water of the United States of America, you can here.
The Debate: Mineral Water, Filtered Water, Distilled Water.
Ooooo it’s a doozy! There’s mud slinging back and forth all over the interwebby thing about what is better for you. Mineral water, filtered water, or distilled water. The general point of agreement is that tap water is off the menu because of all the junk that’s used to “treat,” it. Beyond that though, everyone seems to have differing opinions as to which water is the absolute best to consume for your health.
The mineral water and/or filtered water advocates will tell you that distilled water will leach minerals from your body and will make your body acidic. If you didn’t know already, there is currently a theory that an acidic body is a perfect environment for cancer to form and multiply. We do not know where this theory originated.
So What About Minerals in Water?
O.K. we are going to break it down for you. There are two types of minerals, namely organic and inorganic. Organic minerals are found in the plant food we eat and are essential for healthy living. Inorganic minerals, or mineral salts, are found in water. If you have heard of hard water, the “hardness” is mainly due to inorganic minerals. If you’ve been unlucky enough to taste hard water, you know it’s not nice! Here are some eye opening quotes about minerals and water from some scholarly folks. Far more scholarly than us at any rate!
“The only minerals that the body can utilize are the organic minerals. All other types of minerals are foreign substances to the body and must be eliminated. Distilled water is the only water that can be taken into the body without damage to the tissues.”
– The Choice is Clear by Dr. Allen E Banik, O.D.
“The body can use only organic minerals. It is physiologically impossible for your body to use an inorganic mineral….. When you drink water containing minerals they are inorganic… They have no more virtue in the human body than if the soil or rock itself were eaten.”
– Fit for Life II: Living Health by Harvey & Marylin Diamond.
“The greatest damage done by inorganic minerals – plus waxy cholesterol and salt (sodium chloride) – is in the small arteries and other blood vessels of the brain….. Let us state emphatically that, in our opinion, the misery of arthritis is caused by ingestion of hard water saturated with inorganic minerals and toxins, and an unbalanced diet. These factors combined with inactivity can form acid crystals in the movable joints.”
– Water – The Shocking Truth That Can Save Your Life by Dr. Paul Bragg, N.D. Ph.D. & Dr. Patricia Bragg N.D. Ph.D.
“Water hardness (inorganic minerals in solution) is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract. These (hard minerals) pass from the intestinal walls and get into the lymphatic system, which delivers all of it’s products to the blood, which in turn, distributes to all parts of the body. This is the cause of much human disease.”
– Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic.
Filtered Water and Reverse Osmosis.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is supposed to be the ducks guts (that means the very best) way to clean water. At least that’s what the people who build reverse osmosis plants would have us believe! However, this author can attest to the horrific taste and smell of RO treated water after working on various construction projects in mining areas in Australia where it was commonly utilised to water the working population. A lot of money was spent on bottled water at this time! At one particular site we were given an information session on the reverse osmosis process. It was very interesting to learn that, after the water had been through the process, it was then treated with chemicals “just in case something got through the membrane!” Even though nothing other than the water molecule was supposed to have been able to pass through the membrane. Then minerals were re-added to the water because, at this time, that is the status quo. The question has to be asked; what’s the point?
Therein lies the problem with reverse osmosis. The membrane, though very tough and durable is, none the less, subject to failure. It can tear during construction. The membrane will weaken over time and use, and needs replacing which will further subject it to potential problems during replacement. And at the end of the day, reverse osmosis can not remove the rotten egg smell caused by hydrogen sulphide. Since smell plays such a great role in taste, drinking RO water is a very unpleasant prospect. Again all this begs the question; what’s the point? If it smells bad, tastes bad, and there is a good alternative, why use it?
That leaves us with filters which, by and large, are very good. The ONLY downside with polypropylene, ceramic, and activated carbon filters is that they should not be relied upon to remove micro-organisms 5. Other than that, your Brita or other water filters are a far better option than drinking straight from the city supply!
In Rides Your Knight In Shining Armour. The Hero of The Day…..
That hero is distilled water from steam distillation. It was on one of the abovementioned construction jobs that the author first drank steam distilled water. The job was in lockdown due to an approaching cyclone/hurricane. We were on an island, our bottled water supply had been exhausted, and there could be no new delivery by water vessel because of the dangerous weather. The company running the job had to bring out their emergency supply of bottled water and it so happened that it was steam distilled bottled water. They were keeping the good stuff for themselves!!!
Having grown up on a farm drinking rain water the first taste of the emergency supply was very familiar! But I couldn’t put my finger on why it was so familiar. Then it came to me. It was “rainwater!” It tasted just like the water at home that I had grown up drinking. It was so refreshing and tasted so clean! I noted the manufacturers details and Nashua and I have been purchasing and drinking the 15 litre bottles ever since! That is over 5 years at the time of writing this article in February 2017. If you are in Australia, and you want to know, the brand of water is Refresh® Pure Water.
If you are not in Australia we would urge you to seek out a good distilled drinking water producer in your area. Please ensure that they are using the steam distillation process with a carbon filter. If it is double steam distilled, even better!
Here are some more quotes for your consideration;
“Distilled water acts as a solvent in the body. It dissolves food substances so they can be assimilated and taken into every cell. It dissolves inorganic mineral substances lodged in tissues of the body… By it’s continued use, it is possible to dissolve inorganic minerals, acid crystals and all other waste products of the body without injuring tissues.”
– The Choice is Clear by Dr. Allen E. Banik, O.D.
“Distilled water….acting almost like a magnet, it picks up rejected, discarded and unusable minerals and, assisted by the blood and lymph, carries these to the lungs and kidneys for elimination from the body. Referring to the elimination of these damaging minerals as a leaching out of minerals is erroneous… It doesn’t leach out minerals that have become part of the cell structure… It collects and removes only minerals that have already been rejected or excreted by the cells.”
– Fit for Life II: Living Health by Harvey and Marylin Diamond.
Amazing Water! Hang on to Your Hats, This is Going to Get Wild!
Oxygenated water is the new buzz on the streets. Refresh® have introduced a new brand that has up to 700% more oxygen than other waters. But even more bizarre or amazing than that is the fact that this water has been vibration treated by magnetic field and harmonic resonance, among other steps, using the patented GIE® Water Activation Technology developed in Switzerland. Try as we might, we could not find out what the GIE acronym stands for. In any case, it would be of little to no consequence to us as the letters would be for German language words and the only German word that is in our repertoire is “SHEISA!” What we do know is that it is based on the amazing scientific studies and investigations of Japanese doctor, Dr Masaru Emoto.
This is where things get crazy. For some reason, known only to Dr Emoto, he decided to play music to, say words to, show pictures to, and put labels on bottles of frozen water and then take pictures of the crystalline structures of said water after doing so. In theory, he and his team put “consciousness” and “thought” into the water and changed the crystalline structure of the water by doing so! He played songs like “Imagine,” by John Lennon and “Yesterday,” by The Beatles among many others.
Check out the video on his website here.
The “Imagine,” Dolphins, and Mount Cook Glacier, New Zealand were our favourites! What were yours?
There is also this video of his work on YouTube.
Let’s Not Forget The Packaging.
There has been a lot said about consuming bottled water from plastic bottles because of the presence of BPA (BisPhenol A) in the bottles. BPA acts as a xenoestrogen in the body and also acts as an endocrine disruptor. What does a xenoestrogen do? In short, it messes with a persons hormone levels. It can affect women’s fertility, is suspected by some of causing, or at least contributing to, breast and other cancers. This author is claiming it has been the source of his dreaded “MOOBS,’ otherwise known as Man Boobs. The MOOBS may be caused by a completely sedentary lifestyle, but I’m sticking to the synthetic estrogen theory thank you very much!
Some governmental agencies released studies saying that the levels of BPA in plastic containers were acceptable and would not pose a threat to peoples health. However, they could not deny that BPA has detrimental effects in higher doses. There is just too much evidence. With that in mind, we believe that the consuming public has heard the rumblings about BPA and simply do not want it at all. This has led to many, many bottled water companies discontinuing use of plastic bottles made with BPA. What it has been replaced with, and what hazards the substitutes may pose, is anyone’s guess. The game always continues! Corporate Mung Beans!
Whilst in Thailand, Nashua and I came across a bottled water that caught our attention, firstly because of its great taste, but secondarily, and more importantly, because of it’s innovative packaging. The brand of water was Avitez. It was served to us when we were having dinner at the very posh Mövenpick Resort restaurant. Just as an aside, if you are a fan of corporate success stories, you should check out the story of Mövenpick on their website. It’s inspirational!
As we were saying, Avitez is a still mineral water which tasted really nice. We drink mineral water every now and then when distilled is not available. We are secure in the knowledge that we can eliminate the inorganic minerals because we normally drink only distilled water.
But we digress, the point we were trying to make is that the bottle is very innovative because, as you can see in the picture, it is made 100% from plants! The bottle isn’t made out of fossil fuel oils.
Something Else To Consider.
This post is all about drinking water but something else that is worthy of consideration while on the subject of water is your shower. It is now well established that what comes into contact with our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream. This applies to the water that you shower in also. And we are more concerned with what may be present in the water that is going to be absorbed into our blood and transported to all parts of our body.
But when it comes to showering there is more at play here. Did you know that your body absorbs more chlorine through the skin and lungs while showering than drinking tap water? Chlorine vaporizes in hot shower water and, when inhaled into the lungs, it is transferred into the blood stream. Scientific studies have linked chlorinated water to potentially harmful by-products that can, over time, contribute to such health-threatening conditions as cancer of the bladder, liver, stomach and colon. Heart disease, high blood pressure & allergies have also been linked with chlorine.
The good news is that it is now possible to buy different types of filter systems for your own water supply that will remove the chlorine and hydrogen sulfide, reduce heavy metals, and soften up the water substantially making it much healthier for you. These systems range from inline shower filters which you can install yourself to whole house systems that will filter your residences entire water supply. The whole house systems are a lot more expensive and will require a professional to install. You can have a look at them in our health section under the water tab here if you are interested.
- Tap Water – Bad.
- Bottled Water – Make sure it’s not just tap water put in a bottle! That’s a big scam in The States at the moment. Try to avoid bottles made with BisphenolA (BPA). Glass is best but the plant based plastic bottles are great if you can find them.
- Mineral Water – It’s really not what it’s marketed to be. It contains inorganic minerals which are not useful for the carbon/oxygen machine that we call our bodies. Your organic minerals should come from the plant based foods you consume.
- Steam Distilled Pure Water – That’s the good stuff you should be drinking!
- Oxygenated High Vibration Distilled Water – For us the jury is out on this stuff but we can not discount the theory. Lord knows Nikola Tesla knew a thing or two about the amazing abilities of energy waves, vibration, and resonance! And that was way back at the turn of the century. Nashua and I are going to start consuming it to investigate if we experience any benefits. We will keep you updated with the results.
Well this has been a long post! When setting out on writing this post we were wondering if we would have enough to write about! If you are still with us all the way down here we say thank you for reading and we hope this has been of some benefit to you.
We’re off to play AC/DC to our water and see what happens!
